  • Circumcision Post Care: What to Expect at Home
In the first day after your child's circumcision: Keep your child wrapped snugly below the belly button. It's better if he doesn't kick his legs too much because it can make him uncomfortable. After the first day, you don't have to swaddle him, but you can still do it if he likes it. There will be a white gauze with Vaseline placed over the head of your child's penis. You can change the gauze and Polysporn with each diaper change for the first 72 hours. After that, you can stop using the gauze and directly apply Vaseline to the penis. Keep doing this for a total of 14 days after the surgery. Check your baby's diaper every hour in the first day to see if there is any unusual bleeding. If there is continuous dripping blood, it would be considered abnormal bleeding. There will also be a long, thin strip of gauze wrapped around your child's penis. Let this strip of gauze fall off by itself. It can come off with the first diaper change or take a few days to fall off. Once it's off, you don't need to put it back. Wait until 72 hours after the procedure to give your child a bath. At this point, it is safe to soak him in water. It is not unusual for your child to sleep 6-8 hours after the procedure and to miss a feeding. Some babies will be irritable for a number of minutes to hours afterwards. Behaviorally, most babies are relatively normal after a day or two. A small amount of bleeding is normal. Take some gauze with Vaseline on it and squeeze the bleeding area of the penis with your fingers for 3-5 minutes. Repeat if necessary. Call our clinic at 416-849-2260 ext 0 to speak to our office.
